Weatherproof! Things to do in the North Yorkshire Moors whatever the weather.

Billy Connolly once said "there's no such things as bad weather, only the wrong clothes" and while he's right, it's been more than a bit wet lately. As much as we love a long walk across the Moors, sometimes the Yorkshire weather is a bit much. On those occasions it's nice to know that whatever you've picked to do is totally weatherproof.

Here's our guide to things you can do in the North Yorkshire Moors that are fun whatever the weather.

Near to Lockton

Nestled in the heart of Pickering is the Beck Isle Museum. Showcasing local history and Pickering's heritage, it's a great way to learn about the area, especially if you've got little ones to entertain.

The Kirk Theatre shows a mix of music, live theatre and cinema - check out their website to see what's on.

Just 20 minutes' away in Malton there's another cinema, the Palace, plus you've got great cafes and restaurants plus plenty of independent shops to browse in and while away the time until the rain's blown over.

By the coast

The Sea Life Centre in Scarborough has more than 2500 creatures, including sharks, penguins and pythons. It's a great indoor adventure for adults and kids.

The Alpamare Water Park, by the North bay, is a great fun, with a wave pool and water slides. Perfect for when the sea is a bit too rough (or cold!).

Historic Houses

The magnificent Castle Howard is about half an hour's drive from Lockton and is spectacular but it's not the only historic house on offer in the region.

Nunnington Hall, a manor house on the edge of the Howardian Hills (about 30 minutes' from Lockton) is run by the National Trust. Explore the house, see the seasonal exhibitions and enjoy a scone in the tearooms.

A bit further afield is Beningbrough Hall, another National Trust property. With its walled garden, cosy cafe, and manor house with an art gallery on the first floor you can easily spend a day here. We visited on a very dank day in October and it was the perfect weatherproof visit.

Fancy a drink?

If history isn't your thing and you don't have children to entertain how about a visit to one of the local breweries or distilleries? Whitby Distillery offers a one-hour tour including samples and a souvenir glass.

Just over the Moors at The New Inn, you can tour the Cropton Brewery to find out how they make their award-winning beers.

Closer to Lockton, the Rare Bird distillery in Malton is open to the public and offers gin school experiences.

This is just a sample of what's on offer in the area - there are plenty of options to choose from when the weather isn't to your liking. And of course, if you're still not tempted by any of the above you can always opt to stay in Lock Cottage, light the log burner and have a cosy, lazy day!

Lock Cottage is a self-catering holiday home sleeping 6, situated in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Check availability, find out more about the cottage and book your stay here.
