Pickering is a lovely market town sitting on the southern edge of the North Yorkshire Moors. Just 5 miles from Lock Cottage, it's a great place to spend a quiet afternoon. But you might be wondering what there is to actually do in Pickering.
This month we're taking a look at 5 things you can do in this little gem of a town.
North Yorkshire Moors Railway
Let's start with the big guns. For many people this is what Pickering is all about. The station is right in the centre of town and you can't miss it. Trains run roughly from Easter to October half term (always check the website) and there are events running throughout the year.
Pickering Castle
A 5-10-minute walk from the Market Place you'll find Pickering Castle. This 13th century castle, looked after by English Heritage, is well-preserved and you can see the old keep and get great views of the surrounding countryside.
Beck Isle Museum
Want to find out more about Pickering itself? Take a turn around Beck Isle Museum on Bridge St (near the North Yorkshire Moors Railway). Exhibits have been donated by local people and really give you a feel for Pickering's past.
Shops and Cafes
Pickering is small but has plenty of independent shops to explore. The Hidden Market and various antiques shops are all good ways to while away some time. Add in a stop at one of Pickering's cafes or ice cream shops and the afternoon will gone before you know it.
Go to the theatre
The Kirk Theatre presents musicals, plays, comedy and streams cinema. Check out https://kirktheatre.co.uk/ to see what's on during your stay.
Lock Cottage is a self-catering holiday home sleeping 6, situated in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Check availability, find out more about the cottage and book your stay here.
