5 reasons to holiday in North Yorkshire

Christmas is over. We’re heading into a new year, uncertain of what it may bring. One thing you’re determined to do in January is get that holiday booked. But with all the fab destinations in the UK how do you choose where to go?

The UK has so many fantastic holiday destinations that it can be difficult to decide where to go next. The North Yorkshire Moors is a brilliant location to choose for your 2022 break.

Here’s why:

We’ve got range

The sheer variety on offer in the North Yorkshire Moors is a standalone reason to head there on holiday.

Stunning landscapes with fabulous views? Check

Quaint seaside towns with blue flag beaches? Check

Long country walks (and short country walks)? Check

Moorland? Woodland? Historical houses, outdoor activities, family-friendly attractions? Check, check…you’ve got it by now.

(Also, steam trains.)

It’s family friendly

Whether you’ve got small children, tweens or teens there’s something for everyone in the North Yorkshire Moors.

All ages love a steam train and the North Yorkshire Moors railway running from Pickering to Grosmont is one of the best routes in the country.

Eden Camp near Malton enthused our tween and teen and has the added bonus of being educational so you can give yourself some parent brownie points!

If you’re an active family then Dalby Forest is great for all ages – whether you want to do a Gruffalo trail with the little ones or go hardcore on the mountain-biking trails.

Raising some tiny thrillseekers? Flamingo Land has rides to suit the whole family, as well as an award-winning zoo. Opening hours are seasonal so do check the website before you visit.

The food is amazing

As seen on the recent BBC series The Hairy Bikers Go North the Moors and North Yorkshire Coast are a gastronomic delight (check out episodes 2 and 4 on the iPlayer).

Local produce, innovation and a fierce pride in the area have resulted in North Yorkshire serving up some of the best food in the UK.

Malton, just outside the national park, is known as the food capital of North Yorkshire and the influence has spread out to the rest of the county – you can’t swing a cat in the North Yorkshire Moors without hitting somewhere good to eat.

Our stunning coastline

North Yorkshire has some of the best beaches in the UK. From the quaintness of Robin Hood’s Bay, to the seclusion of Runswick Bay, to traditional British seaside fare in Scarborough, you’re spoilt for choice.

And who doesn’t love Whitby with its steep winding streets and imposing abbey ruins looking out over the sea?

I could walk 500 miles…well, nearly

The North Yorkshire Moors are a walker’s paradise. The Cleveland Way runs for 109 miles from the market town of Helmsley out to Saltburn-by-the-Sea on the coast, and then down the coastline to Filey. You can take on the whole thing or pick and choose sections – our favourite is the 5-mile stretch along the coast from Runswick Bay to Sandsend, with stunning sea views all the way.

Staying inland there are plenty of routes to choose. Keep it simple on a route like the Goathland to Grosmont trail, following the old railway line, or go wilder and head out across the moorland. Whether you’re looking for a gentle wander or a full-on trek you’re guaranteed to find breathtaking scenery and it really is the best way to experience the Moors.

So you can see you’ve really got no reason not to come to North Yorkshire this year.
